The Kagerplassen

The Kagerplassen form one of the most beautiful and characteristic water sports areas in the Netherlands. A unique landscape of lakes, islands, reed beds, and windmills, where Dutch water life comes to life.

Whether you come to sail, paddleboard, boat, or relax, the Kagerplassen offer endless possibilities. Rent a sloop and discover the picturesque villages of Warmond, Kaag, and Buitenkaag, where charming terraces and authentic windmills form the backdrop. The quiet sailing routes lead you past meadows full of meadow birds and over ancient towpaths towards Leiden and the Braassem.

The area is also a discovery for walkers and cyclists. The polders and dykes offer beautiful views and lead you past farms, church towers, and small ferries that connect the islands. Every season has its charm: lively in summer, hushed and serene in winter.

Warmond and Sassenheim

On the banks of the Kagerplassen lie Warmond and Sassenheim: two charming villages where history, nature, and hospitality converge. Here, you can still taste the tranquility of old Holland, but with all modern conveniences within reach.

Warmond exudes atmosphere and tradition. The village is rich in monumental buildings, picturesque harbour basins, and winding streets along the water. In the centre, you will find inviting terraces, fine restaurants, and small boutiques. Nature lovers can indulge themselves in the Krantz forest, or take a walk to the historic Huys te Warmond. Thanks to its location directly on the Kagerplassen, Warmond is also the starting point for boat trips, sailing excursions, or relaxing days on the water.

  • On the water: Warmond is situated directly on the Kagerplassen. This location makes it an important centre for water sports and recreation. The village is connected to the lakes via the Leede, a waterway that runs through the village and connects to the Oude Rijn and the Ringvaart.
  • Historic beach ridge: The village centre is built on an old beach ridge, a raised sand ridge running parallel to the coastline. This elevated position made the area ideal for habitation throughout history. This is reflected in the structure of the village, with the Dorpsstraat and Herenweg running parallel to each other.
  • Central position: Although Warmond feels rural, it is excellently accessible. It lies close to the A44 motorway and has fast connections to cities such as Leiden (a short cycle ride away), The Hague, Schiphol, and Amsterdam. The nearby Sassenheim railway station provides a good connection to public transport.

Sassenheim is located slightly further inland and has a lively village core with shops, cafés, and restaurants. Around Teylingen Castle — one of the oldest ruins in Holland — you can feel the rich history of the region. At the same time, Sassenheim is modern and well-connected: with the A44 and the NS station, you can reach Leiden, The Hague, or Amsterdam in a short time. The bulb fields in spring colour the surroundings in enchanting shades, making the village extra attractive for walkers and cyclists.

Together, Warmond and Sassenheim form the ideal starting point for those who want to enjoy the best of both worlds: the peace of the water and the conviviality of village life. Whether you come to sail, walk, cycle, or simply to unwind — here you experience the true charm of South Holland.

Leiden

Just a fifteen-minute boat ride or drive from Villapark Ardea lies Leiden: a city where history and conviviality effortlessly converge. The picturesque canals, old city gates, and monumental buildings tell stories from the Golden Age, while the many museums – such as the Museum of Ethnology, Naturalis, and the National Museum of Antiquities – offer a glimpse into the world of then and now.

Leiden is also known for its vibrant character. Thanks to the many students, there is always something to experience: from lively terraces and atmospheric cafés to markets, festivals, and concerts. The compact city centre is ideal for exploring on foot, with a new view or hidden courtyard around every corner.

Those coming from the Kagerplassen literally sail or cycle into the heart of the city. And after a day full of impressions, you return just as easily to the peace of the water – a unique combination of nature, culture, and relaxation within reach.

Noordwijk and Katwijk

A short distance from Villapark Ardea lie the charming coastal towns of Noordwijk and Katwijk, two seaside resorts that each have their own atmosphere and charm, but both form the ideal destination for a day at the sea.

Noordwijk is known for its wide beaches, lively boulevard, and stylish appearance. It is a place where sun, sea, and conviviality come together. In summer, you can enjoy a refreshing dip or lunch at one of the many beach pavilions, while the vast dunes invite long walks and cycle rides. In the atmospheric centre, you will find boutiques, restaurants, and galleries that give the resort a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere.

Katwijk exudes the charm of an authentic fishing village. The colourful beach huts, the cosy village centre, and the hospitable beach bars provide a warm, informal atmosphere. Here, you can still taste the real coastal life – with fresh fish on your plate, sea breeze in your hair, and a view of the surf.

Together, Noordwijk and Katwijk form the perfect extension of a stay around the Kagerplassen. Within half an hour, you exchange the peace of the water for the sound of the sea. Whether you choose the liveliness of Noordwijk or the authentic charm of Katwijk – here you experience the best of the Dutch coast.

Peace in the Randstad

Warmond and the Kagerplassen are situated in an exceptionally favourable location: surrounded by water, meadows, and nature, yet surprisingly close to the major cities. Within half an hour, you can drive to Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, or Utrecht, and Leiden is even just around the corner. Schiphol is also quickly and easily accessible thanks to the nearby A44 and the Sassenheim NS station.

Here, you find the peace of the countryside and the freedom of the water, while the dynamics of the Randstad always remain close by. It is precisely that combination – silence and space just a stone’s throw from the city – that makes Warmond and the Kagerplassen such a special place.
